Tools & Supplies That You Need
- Wet-Dry Vacuum
- Rug shampoo (or mild dish soap)
- Bucket
- Broom
- Tarp
- Hose
- Towels
- Soft-bristle brush or sponge

Remove Dirt & Debris
Opt for a sunny day to take your rug outside or on the patio and use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt and debris from both sides of the woolen area rug. You can also use a broom for sweeping or a rug beater to loosen deep down embedded dirt particles.
Mix Your Cleaner
Take cold water in a large bucket and add gentle detergent solution, mild dish soap, or rug shampoo such as Woolite and give a nice stir. You also need one bucket of clean water.
Do a Color Test
Pouring any kind of stain remover directly on your wool mat can cause the color to bleed or disappear. Put a dab of the rug cleaner on a cloth to ensure that the color doesn’t bleed during washing and cleaning.
Scrub the Wool Floor Covering
Soak the sponge in the gentle detergent solution and lightly scrub the woolen carpet from one end to the other end. Try to clean in a grid pattern of 3 X 3 feet in one go with gentle pressure. Wash the sponge intermittently to wash the dirt off. Wool is an absorbent fiber so avoid over-wetting of wool rug filaments.
Rinse the Fleece Rug
Once the scrubbing process is done of a single grid, use a sponge and clean water to “rinse” the particular rug section you have cleaned. You can also do it with a hosepipe. Do not skip this stage of wool rug cleaning because detergent magnetizes more soil to your wool floor covering.
Remove Excess Water
Use old towels to bolt the clean area and remove the excess moisture. You can also take the advantage of a dry vacuum to bolted the entire rug surface.
Let the Woolen Rug Dry
